The 2, the express spine

The 2 is the Bronx-to-Brooklyn express workhorse of the IRT trunk line, running from Wakefield in the Bronx down through Manhattan to Flatbush–Brooklyn College in Brooklyn. It shares its Broadway–Seventh Avenue corridor with the 1 and the 3, but where the 1 crawls local, the 2 is the one that actually moves you — the express-only backbone between 96th Street and Chambers Street.

In Manhattan the 2 is the fastest way between Harlem and the Financial District for anyone living west of Fifth Avenue. It also handles the way uptown: 125th Street and the Bronx come up through the Lenox Avenue corridor to 145th Street. That split — express through Manhattan, then fanning into the Bronx and Brooklyn — makes the 2 the workhorse for commuters crossing the island in both directions every rush.

Rider well-knowns: at 96th Street the 2 switches to the express track and suddenly the stop count halves. The Flatbush terminal is a proper end-of-the-line station with its own yard, so Brooklyn riders get first pick of usually-empty departures. And because the 2 shares tracks with the 3 and 5 north of the Grand Concourse, a single hiccup up in the Bronx can ripple through the whole express corridor south of it.

For a flung-out metro area, the 2's reliability is quietly by-the-numbers most days. It's not the fastest express (the 4/5 usually beat it), not the prettiest, and not the one tourists brag about — but the 2 is the line that simply does the job, and New York runs on exactly that kind of train.

Or — and hear me out — don't drive

Look, the 2 is a 7.8today. That's not perfect. It's still better than the alternative. (Estimates below are based on a typical weekday run, not your exact trip; both Uber and your car move on a curve the MTA never will.)

HowCostTimeFootnote
Subway (2)$2.90~12 minto a sample Bedford Av → 14 St run
Uber$18–248–22 minsurge adds 1.5–2× on a rainy weekday
Your car$0.65 per mile + parking12–45 minand the parking part is the prank
